Presidential Champions
The following candidates from both parties (totaling more than half) signed the ServeNext Presidential Pledge to Expand National Service:
-
Senator Joe Biden
- Senator Hillary Clinton
-
Senator Chris Dodd
-
Senator John Edwards
-
Senator Mike Gravel
-
Congressman Dennis Kucinich
-
Governor Mike Huckabee
-
Senator Barack Obama
-
Governor Bill Richardson
It should also be noted that while Senator John McCain does not sign candidate pledges, he told ServeNext members that he proudly stands on his record of support for national service which, following 9/11, included co-sponsoring a bill in the U.S. Senate to expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 members. This past winter, he also invited ServeNext to travel on his trademark Straight Talk Express as he visited an AmeriCorps program in New Hampshire.
Candidates signing the ServeNext Presidential Pledge are committed:
-
To support legislation and funding to expand annual AmeriCorps slots to 175,000 – an increase of 100,000 annual members.
- To support National Service policy that encourages and provides opportunities for Americans to commit at least 4,000 hours – the equivalent of two years over the course of their lives – to the service of others.
- To support expansion of service-learning programs in America’s education system through Learn & Serve America.
- To support funding for the expansion of the Peace Corps.
- To support expansion of Senior Corps and other policies that increase service opportunities for Americans 55 years and older.
The success of the ServeNext Presidential Pledge campaign prompted leaders to suggest an increase in the number of AmeriCorps members in the ServeNext Congressional Pledge, matching proposals for 250,000 AmeriCorps members by both presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama and Republican nominee John McCain.
